SFCDI September 2019 | BIMTrack and Topologic

On September 18th, 12:00 pm PST, SFCDI  welcomes John Barkwell and Wassim Jabi . This month’s meeting will be hosted at the AIA 130 Sutter St # 600, San Francisco, CA 94104.

Featured Presentation: BIM Track

We understand that you want your data the way you want it. Get an introduction to the communication platform BIM Track, it’s API, and potential Dynamo applications.

Speaker: John Barkwell

Director of Business Development – USA
Over 25 years’ experience driving technology innovation processes in the AEC/O industry. Was actively involved in the transition to CAD, then BIM, and now to cloud-based solutions for real-time solutions.

Feature Presentation: Topologic

One of the challenges facing industry is that optimization is usually offered only within a domain-specific software engine. One solution is to use general-purpose design environments such as Dynamo coupled with optimization engines such as Project Refinery to enable multi-domain, multi-objective optimization. This talk will introduce Topologic (https://topologic.app), a new and free software kit based on the concept of non-manifold topology. Topologic offers the ability to think spatially, topologically and conceptually about a design project. Topologic is also tightly coupled with EnergyPlus for energy analysis within Dynamo and with Project Refinery. Thus, Topologic offers the possibility of multi-domain, multi-objective optimization where the involved domains go beyond traditional building performance. This talk will introduce the related concepts, illustrate the features of the software, and run through example workflows.

Speaker: Wassim Jabi

Dr. Wassim Jabi earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. While in the U.S., he lead the Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA), secured a $250,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, and taught at various universities before moving to Europe in 2008. He is currently a Reader (tenured Associate Professor) at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University where he leads the digital design area. Dr. Jabi has published widely on topics ranging from parametric and generative design to the role of light in architecture and building performance simulation. He is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Architectural Computing (IJAC). Dr. Jabi has written a book titled “Parametric Design for Architecture” (Laurence King Publishing, London). His current research is at the intersection of parametric design, the representation of space, building performance simulation, and robotic fabrication in architecture. Dr. Jabi has recently secured a significant grant to investigate innovative and sustainable 3D printing of large-scale architectural components and structures using the school’s industrial robotic arm.
